This attitude is frankly mechanistic, to some minds grossly materialistic, but more progress may be anticipated by follow ing mechanistic hypotheses than by the pursuit of theses based on foundations the stability of which is not yet agreed on. Yüksek fırın içerisine üflenen sıcak hava kok kömürünü yakarak karbondioksit    CO₂ haline dönüştürür.  CO₂ ise yüksek  sıcakta  kok  ile  yeniden  reaksiyona  girerek  karbonmonoksit  CO  şeklinde  parçalanır.  Bu reaksiyonlar sonucu asıl bileşenleri azot  N₂ ve karbonmonoksit   CO  olan   bir  gaz  fırın  içerisinde  yükselir.

Karbonmonoksit doymamış bir bileşiktir.  Daha fazla yanması mümkündür ve oksijeni kendisine bağlamayı çok sever.  Çok iyi bir redükleyici olmasının diğer bir nedeni de gaz olarak her yere nüfuz edebilmesidir.  Bu nedenle poröz ve çatlaklı cevherler daha kolay redüklenebilirler.  Karbonmonoksit fırın içerisinde yükselirken redüksiyon işlemi de demir oksitler üzerinde kademeli olarak gerçekleşir.  Azot reaksiyonlarda yer almaz ve değişime uğramaz.
